SKV association reaches an important milestone this year – 140 years of activity. Its beginnings are traced back in the 19th century, when Transylvania was home to a great variety of ethnicities. Thus, the association has a German name – Siebenbürgischer Karpatenverein and a Romanian name – Asociaţia Carpatină Ardeleană a Turiştilor.
Until 1944, it had a steady growth in terms of activities and relationships developed with other European associations. As a result, it had built tens of mountain huts, arranged thousands of kilometers of hiking trails and supported the evolution of a robust trend in the local society regarding hiking and mountaineering. Unfortunately, with the instauration of the communist regime, SKV was dissolved and banned due to political reasons.
Despite the long pause, some older members decided to re-establish the association in 1996, thus resuming its work in terms of supporting the development of hiking infrastructure. It has started to function along with other hundreds of mountain associations in Romania, which organize trips, contests and ecological initiatives.
Nowadays, the association continues the legacy of the first members and takes on bigger and bigger challenges. Therefore, it had managed to define the 2000km of the trails that are part of E3 and E8 in Romania. Notably, the association renovated a historical mountain hut and created a 600km network of biking trails. Moreover, SKV organises expeditions, proposes new hiking trails and marks the existing ones, has many initiatives, contributes to the elaboration of normative acts, creates tourism development strategies for large areas and most importantly – organizes Eurorando 2021.
